Tips for Waste Management

Americans alone generate over 250 million tons of waste per year. To better visualize that amount, that is 250,000,000,000 kilograms of waste. In fact, it is reported that there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050. The good news is that decades of focusing on recycling has rerouted a third of that waste away from landfills to sustainable locations. At M&M Waste, we know that responsible waste management is possible, easy, and rewarding. In this article, we will share some tips on how you can help keep our planet keep for generations to come. If you have any questions about disposing of certain waste, then please call M&M Waste. We would love to help.

Compost Your Organic Waste

There is a ton of organic waste that homeowners and business owners mistake for trash. Food scraps, grass trimmings, leaves, eggshells, and fruit peels are just some of the organic waste that can be turned into nutrient-rich compost instead. We wont get into the details of how to make your own compost bin but there are plenty of articles available. Compost can be added to soil to help plants grow healthily. Be sure to investigate which items can go into the compost bin, though. For example, you do not want to throw in your compost pile:

  • Bones
  • Fatty Foods
  • Meat
  • Kitty Litter
  • Invasive Weeds
  • Diseased Plants and Leaves

Recycle or Reuse

In our age of abundance, we are quick to throw away perfectly reusable or recyclable items. Clothes and shoes can be donated to your local shelter or Goodwill. Plastic bottles, containers, food and beverage cans, paper, flattened cardboard, and glass bottles and containers, meanwhile, can be recycled. Recycling saves landfills from bloating and reduces the amount of energy spent on making new products. Remember to clean these items before recycling them and do not place them inside plastic bags. In fact, we recommend you reuse those plastic bags instead. Further, cups with wax or plastic coatings are not recyclable. Invest in a reusable cup instead. The same goes for polystyrene foam and plastic.

What About Electronics?

It seems like new technology comes out every day. It is amazing how fast electronics become outdated, so what do you do with old electronic devices? Computers, laptops, printers, copiers, televisions, DVD players, and stereos are just some of the items that people throw in the trash but should recycle instead. Recycling these items protects landfills from toxic chemicals such as chromium and mercury. You can get a decent amount of money for recycling these instead!
