How Renting a Dumpster Can Help You Sell Your Home

Are you trying to sell your home? Decluttering is a must! While most don't want to part with our "valuables," we never wear, use, or even look at our items. Placing your home on the market without decluttering can significantly reduce the chance of people viewing your house and your chances of selling your house. Sure, you could declutter a little here and there, but it is far more effective and satisfying to do it all at once — full steam ahead. Contact M&M Waste to rent a dumpster, and we can pick it up when it is complete, or you're done!

De-Clutter BEFORE Selling Your Home

If you're looking to sell your home, chances are the last thing you want is a bunch of clutter. If you want to sell fast and for top dollar, your home must be as clean and clutter-free as possible. It can be challenging to get rid of all the stuff we accumulate over time, but if you want to sell your home quickly, decluttering is a must. Most of us want to declutter, but it can seem overwhelming. Set some rules for yourself while decluttering and dive in. When a person lists their home on the market, their home is often in the best condition since they lived there. It is very satisfying to declutter.

While some buyers might not like having to declutter their new home, they appreciate it when they see how much space it is for them to use. If you have clutter all over the place, it will make your home seem smaller than it is and can lead to safety issues with children or pets running around.

Tips To Declutter

You've decided to put your home on the market. The first step is to get it ready for showing. Here are some tips on how to declutter your home so it can be sold quickly and for the best price possible:

  • Clean your home from top to bottom. Ensure your appliances are clean and in working order, that floors are vacuumed, windows are clean, curtains are fresh, counters are wiped down, etc.
  • Get rid of any broken items you don't want or need anymore - broken chairs, old TVs, lamps with dead light bulbs, etc.
  • Remove excess knick-knacks and wall hangings - do you need ten pairs of matching salt & pepper shakers? What about all those ceramic figurines? You can't keep them all! Get rid of them!
  • Remove unhealthy plants from your home - if they're dying or have bugs, get rid of them! You don't want those things in your house anyway!
  • Clear out the kitchen cabinets - throw them away if you don't use them! If it's still good, then donate it! Or sell it at a yard sale or online
  • Erase any dusty walls with a wet rag or sponge and clean them with vinegar (or other natural cleaners) and water. Use a microfiber cloth if possible because they're super absorbent and won't leave lint behind as rags do. Hang up all pictures you know are going into storage or out of sight when you move out (especially if they're valuable).
  • Clothing - When Was the Last Time You Wore It? Get rid of clothes that haven't seen the light of day in months or years (or ever). First, take an inventory of what you have. Then sort through each item and ask yourself three questions: When was the last time I wore it? How often did I wear it before then? Do I love this piece enough to keep it? If not, go ahead and toss it in a pile for Goodwill or another clothing donation service to pick up later.
  • If you have a garage or attic, clear out all the things that are taking up space there too. If you have any furniture or appliances that no longer work but are still useable, consider donating them rather than throwing them away. You can also store items like this until you sell your home, so they're not sitting around taking up space!

Options To Consider For Your Items

Rent a dumpster to get rid of items they don't want. The best way to use a dumpster is to rent one from M&M Waste and fill it up with everything you don't need. Then, you can call the dumpster company, and we will come to pick it up!

Keep - Rent a Storage Unit

If you have so much stuff that you don't know what to do with it all, one option is to rent a storage unit until you've found a new place to live or until you decide what to do with each item individually. This will allow you to keep your personal belongings safe until they're ready for use again or until you can find someone else who might want them for themselves.

Donate - Facebook Groups, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Churches

If there are still some things you'd like to donate, but they don't seem to be of interest or use to anyone else, consider donating them on social media groups such as Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Many charitable organizations accept donations from individuals who no longer need their items (like the Salvation Army).

Sell - eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Mercari, Etsy

If you have antiques or other valuable items to sell on eBay or another site, go ahead and get them listed now! It'll take time for them to sell and make their way back into your life again (if they do), but at least this way, they won't take up space in your new place! As a reminder, buyers often search for certain items and don't discount parts for kitchen appliances, etc. It does take time to list but is well worth the effort.

Dumpster - Everything ELSE!

One way renting a dumpster can help you sell your home is by allowing you to get rid of everything else. If things in your home don't belong there and aren't being used anymore, removing them will take up space in your home, which means less room for buyers to look at when they come through.

You may even have large items like furniture or appliances that could take up valuable space in your backyard or garage. When this happens, people think of these things as clutter and try to get rid of them before they even consider buying something else from someone else's house. The good news is that hiring a dumpster gives you an easy way to get rid of all those unwanted items without worrying about where they will go and how they will get there.

M&M Waste

Now would be an excellent time to declutter if you want to sell your home. You'll want to get rid of everything you don't need. The idea is to make the space seem more significant. If everything you own is in plain sight, it can make the room or house feel small. A common move people will make is to start using boxes in the garage instead of having things out and visible in the garage. You might consider leaving a few things out to hang on walls and get used as decor to show potential buyers that this space is used. When you are done, call M&M Waste, and we will come to haul away our dumpster rental and everything you are getting rid of.
